Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

50mm f1.4
So, here's a small review of my new lens, The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM.
Basically, it is a great lens and focal length for portraits photography- 50mm gives a very nice perspective of the human figure which close to what human eyes see. Wide aperture f/1.4 is very useful for low light photography, and gives a very nice bokeh/depth of field.

Some of you might be curious why did I choosed this lens instead of the 50mm f/1.8, which cost about RM1000 cheaper. First, I don't like the all-plastic construction including the lens mount of the f/1.8, it feels like a toy. The focusing motor is very noisy, and the AF is quite slow, compared to the f/1.4. I also made a test before purchase, shot a couple pics with both lenses with my camera and compared on the pc monitor, I found that the colors and contrast from f/1.8 is a bit dull while the f/1.4 is more popping out. However, it is still a very sharp lens for it's price.

50mm f1.4
A small, light, fast, sharp and quality lens.
50mm f1.4
The 50 f/1.4's 8-blade aperture creates a good foreground/background blur quality.
50mm f1.4
The Micro USM (Ultrasonic Motor) motor provides fast and quiet auto focusing.

Here are some of the sample shots I took with this lens. It's performance is very satisfying, especially indoor photography, now I can get a decent shutter speed even in low light condition, with the aperture wide open, it also creates a nice blurry fore/background. :)
